New Single-Player Title in the Works for "Sword and Fairy" Series
The beloved classic RPG "Sword and Fairy" is set to receive a fresh single-player title, as revealed during a recent player exchange event for the open-world game "Sword and Fairy: World" held in Shanghai. The event featured Yao Zhuangxian, the general manager of Softstar Technology, often referred to as the "father of Sword and Fairy." He shared exciting updates regarding the new project following the global rights transfer of the franchise.
In 2021, CMGE acquired the mainland China rights for "Sword and Fairy," and this past September, they invested nearly NT$200 million to secure the global rights for the IP. With this acquisition, the development team has been working diligently on a new single-player installment. According to reports from IT Home, Yao Zhuangxian disclosed that while the new project has been in preparation, the team has faced numerous challenges along the way.
Challenges and Development Direction
One significant hurdle is the lukewarm market performance of "Sword and Fairy 7." As a result, the team intends to consolidate resources and thoroughly prepare before officially commencing development on the new single-player title. Yao indicated that there are preliminary plans in place, with the team considering whether to create a remake of the original "Sword and Fairy" or to develop an entirely new storyline.
"No matter which direction we choose, our commitment is to uphold the high quality and emotional depth that the 'Sword and Fairy' series is known for," Yao stated. "Our goal is to provide players with a richer and more profound experience." The original "Sword and Fairy" was first released in July 1995 on the MS-DOS platform and has since been ported to Windows 95 and the SEGA Saturn.
Sales Success and Future Plans
The latest installment, "Sword and Fairy 7," developed by Beijing Softstar under the Daewoo Information banner, launched in 2021. As of the end of 2023, the PC version has sold approximately 730,000 copies, while the cloud gaming version has surpassed 210,000 units, and the console version has sold over 100,000 copies. These figures highlight the enduring popularity of the franchise and set high expectations for future releases.
Meanwhile, the open-world RPG "Sword and Fairy: World," developed by the Manta Studio under CMGE, recently underwent testing in China this October. It is scheduled to launch on January 9, 2025, for PC, iOS, and Android, with cross-platform save support. Pre-registration is currently open, generating excitement among fans eager to explore this new addition to the franchise.
Exploring New Storylines and Gameplay Mechanics
As the development of the new single-player title progresses, fans are keen to see what innovative storylines and gameplay mechanics will be introduced. The choice between a classic remake or a new narrative presents an opportunity to blend nostalgia with fresh experiences. This could appeal to both long-time fans of the series and new players alike.
Community Engagement and Feedback
With the community playing a crucial role in shaping the future of the "Sword and Fairy" series, engaging with players through forums and social media could provide valuable insights. Gathering feedback on what elements fans cherish most could guide the development team in creating a game that resonates deeply with its audience.
The Impact of Modern Gaming Trends
Moreover, as gaming continues to evolve, integrating modern trends such as multiplayer features or enhanced graphics could significantly enhance the player experience. The development team may consider how to incorporate these aspects while staying true to the essence of the "Sword and Fairy" series.
